Best American Airlines Personal Item

I recently had a friend ask me which bag she should purchase to use as a personal item for her trip. Her airline is American Airlines so I looked up the max sizes for her personal and carry-on. Your personal item like a purse or small handbag must fit under the seat in front of you. 

FROM AMERICAN AIRLINES WEBSITE:

Personal Item dimensions should not exceed 18 x 14 x 8 inches / 45 x 35 x 20 centimeters

Carry-on dimensions shouldn’t exceed 22 x 14 x 9 inches / 56 x 36 x 23 centimeters (including handles and wheels)

Normally, I recommend the Travelpro baggage line (watch what the flight crew is using) and my go to carry on is a Travelpro FlightCrew5 Flight Tote but even on Delta that is a bit too large for a personal item.

Another great option is the Travelpro Maxlite 5 Softside but at 18x11x8 this bag could be an extra 3x18" larger and still fit.

For me, the best option for American Airlines personal item would be the Travelpro Maxlite 5 Softside rolling underseat tote. The biggest reason is that, although I love my Crew5 Flight Tote, I tend to overpack it and then I get stuck carrying it around. I have wished it had wheels many times.

The biggest drawback to this underseat option is that it doesn't have a trolley sleeve to slip over my carry-on handle. The solution is to buy this J-hook. Using a J-hook is not only convenient, it makes your rolling carry-on less top heavy and is more maneuverable.
